We have so many exciting new projects in the pipeline and can’t wait to share them here. Today we’re revisiting a sensational design by Janet McCann — a shoot we photographed nearly a year ago that has since appeared in multiple publications, both online and in print. It remains one of our all-time favorites.
Janet’s work reads as elegant and timeless. Her designs are distinguished by custom, handmade, heirloom-quality furniture — a lost art in an era when many designers simply select off-the-shelf product. Every piece, down to the smallest sculpture, is one-of-a-kind. That attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship mark her as a true artist among designers.
Over the next several posts we’ll showcase a few rooms from this project and highlight aspects of Janet’s approach. We’re also looking forward to covering her new projects soon. More to come.
We met architect Rod Kelly and interior designer Susan Purkey on-site as they walked us through this extensive kitchen remodel. The team at Benvenuti & Stein are masters at reimagining spaces. When you step into the completed kitchen, you find yourself asking, “Why didn’t the architect do this in the first place?”
Benvenuti handcrafts all their millwork and builds custom cabinetry by hand from scratch in their own production facility. Before installation, every piece is assembled and checked to ensure a perfect fit. In my 30 years of photographing high-end homes, I’ve rarely seen work of this caliber. Geno Benvenuti often says each project becomes a labor of love — and you feel it the moment you open a drawer or glide your hand across the fine finishes.

As architectural photographers we sometimes photograph simple spaces. The key is to make the simple spaces look amazing, to capture what the builder, architect and interior design visioned. I believe this one simple image is a demonstration of doing just that. This commercial break room by Key Interiors is beautifully designed. Form follow function. It’s extremely well executed and is certainly a pleasant space for a break from the office, to prepare a quick snack, grab a coffee or have an informal meeting. Debby Hill heads up the design department at Key, and her team may just be the finest commercial interior designers in the business. Oh, and I love the ‘pop’ of color that the counter stools deliver. Catching up on displaying some images from a shoot last year with architect Nate Kipnis. The home’s mid-century modern architecture would not be out of place in Palm Springs, yet here it is tucked neatly into a mature Northern Illinois subdivision. The execution is flawless.

Couldn’t help revisiting images from this contemporary Chicago condo by JMD Builders. The entire apartment reads like a gallery—fine art balanced with custom-built furniture, each piece curated into the architecture. High-gloss kitchen cabinetry frames glorious slabs of marble; the island’s waterfall edge, carved from matching stone, turns a utilitarian centerpiece into a sculptural statement. Light and materiality play together throughout the space, elevating everyday surfaces into moments of artistic reflection. This condo was truly something special—one of our all-time favorites.

We photographed this contemporary master suite for high-end builder Jerry Dardick of JMD Builders. This condo has been featured in multiple publications, our featured projects, and blog sites — a true benchmark project where no expense was spared. Every detail, down to the paint on the wall, is bespoke. JMD’s craftsmen designed and executed a one-of-a-kind space.
