Mid Century Modern Master Suite:

Working in an older home—especially one from the modern period like this late-1950s residence—means balancing preservation with contemporary comfort. The homeowners wanted to keep the unmistakable mid-century modern character while bringing finishes and amenities fully up to date. Michelle Rohrer Lauer, one of Chicagoland’s most celebrated interior designers, delivered a thoughtful update that honors the original architecture while introducing a heightened sense of luxury.

Custom furnishings and carefully chosen wall coverings reinforce the home’s mid-century lines and proportions while elevating the interiors with layered textures and refined materials. The master suite received a comprehensive transformation: new flooring, twin custom vanities with marble counters, upgraded fixtures, and cohesive wall coverings that tie the space together. A bespoke soaking tub and a fully appointed shower complete the project, turning the master bath into a serene, spa-like retreat that respects the home’s past and meets modern expectations.

Interior Architectural Elements:

Michael Buss is a joy to shoot for. When he walks you through a home he designed, he’s quick to point out the details that make the difference. Look at the woodwork in the family room: bespoke built-in bookcases, a crafted mantel and wainscoting framing the fireplace, a deep coffered ceiling, and a stunning traditional staircase. It doesn’t stop there—note the kitchen cabinets and the one-off range hood. It’s also worthy to note this masterful multi-stepped crown molding throughout. These elements are what set a fine home apart from a house, and exactly what you can expect when working with a talented architect/designer. More to come.

Master Suite by Michael Buss Architects:

Continuing in this home we photographed for Michael Buss, this spacious master suite showcases beautiful vaulted ceilings that enhance the room’s grand scale. The large bedroom opens into a luxurious master bath featuring twin vanities, two generously sized walk-in closets, and a dramatic walk-through shower. A classic slipper soaking tub provides a serene focal point for relaxation, balancing the clean, modern lines with timeless comfort. Carefully considered finishes and thoughtful layout create a refined retreat that feels both spacious and intimately livable. Children's Bed & Bath:

I enjoy photographing work for designers and architects, especially children's rooms that have a clear theme. Case in point: this bedroom. Bold colors—deep green for the adventure side, with blue and orange accents and an oversized bear—give away the obvious connection to the Chicago Bears. The composition, color balance, and playful details continue into the Jack & Jill bath. The architect/designer, Michael Buss loved doing this and it made it joy to shoot. More to come from this home!

Clever Lower Level:

We photographed this home for interior designer Jennifer Butler a few back, and we were really impressed with how much room Jennifer and her design team were able to coax out os such a modestly sized mid-century home.  The lower level for example had the floors dug out for additional head room.  The comfortable family room, office nook, clever under stairs storage, a powder room, spare bedroom and a full move theatre.  Did I mention the walk in wine cellar?  In all, a beautifully executed transformation.  More to come.  www.normansizemore.com

Repurposing Retail Space:

We love photographing renovated commercial spaces where architects have preserved original architectural elements. This former Chicago retail storefront has been thoughtfully transformed into a modern workspace for an advertising agency while retaining authentic pieces of its past.

Ornate exterior iron columns that once framed the brick façade and windows have been brought inside, now punctuating the interior and adding character and history to the office. An exposed exterior wall reveals original brickwork and layers of earlier remodeling—subtle evidence of the building’s evolution over time.

Mid Century Lower Level Make Over:

We met with architect Rod Kelly on site for a photoshoot of Benvenuti & Stein’s latest basement remodel. Rod walked us through the complexities of reworking a 60-year-old foundation—structural coordination, mechanical re-routing, moisture management, and the tight tolerances older homes demand. The challenges were many, but the finished space proves the effort was worth it.

Every element from Benvenuti & Stein is custom manufactured in their own workshops. The fine bar, bespoke counter and shelving, refrigerated walk-in wine cellar, and hand-rubbed wall paneling—finishings that wouldn’t be out of place in the most palatial residences—are all meticulously crafted by hand. The results combine refined craftsmanship with thoughtful architectural problem-solving.
